Shooting Stars of the Small Screen: Next on TV CONFIDENTIAL

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Saddle up for two hours of conversation about your favorite TV Westerns on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, premiering Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Our guests will include Douglas Brode, author of more than 30 books on film, television and popular culture, including Shooting Stars of the Small Screen, a comprehensive look at more than 450 actors who starred in television Westerns over the past 60 years, and The Yellow Rose of Texas, a graphic novel that tells the story of Emily Morgan, the African-American who, legend has it, inspired the famous folk song of the same name. Shooting Stars of the Small Screen includes an overview of the history of television Westerns, from Davy Crockett and Gunsmoke to Lonesome Dove and Deadwood, as well as a thoughtful introduction from the late Fess Parker. Doug Brode will be joining us in our second hour.

Also on this program, David Krell will take a look at one of the very first television Westerns, The Lone Ranger, from its early days on radio to the infamous lawsuit from 1979 in which Wrather Corporation, the owner of the Lone Ranger character, pulled the mask off Clayton Moore, the actor known to generations for playing The Masked Man. David thinks this lawsuit is “the greatest show business story never told.” We’ll ask him what he means by that when he joins us in our first hour.

Film and television actress Ann Rutherford (Gone with the Wind) will be with us in the studio on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

One of the great leading ladies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Ann Rutherford’s many films include such classics as the popular Andy Hardy series with Mickey Rooney, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty with Danny Kaye, Pride and Prejudice with Laurence Olivier and, of course, Gone with the Wind with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. The wife of legendary television producer William Dozier (Batman), Ms. Rutherford’s many appearances on the small screen include such landmark series as Playhouse 90, Perry Mason and The Donna Reed Show, as well as two appearances as Bob Hartley’s mother-in-law on The Bob Newhart Show.

Ann Rutherford will be appearing at the next Hollywood Show at the Burbank Marriott Hotel in Burbank, California on Saturday, July 24. If you can’t make this event, we certainly hope you’ll join us.
