Shelley Morrison and Walter Dominguez: Next on TVC

Actress/producer Shelley Morrison and documentary filmmaker Walter Dominguez will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio.
After a long and successful acting career that includes such films and television series as The Flying Nun, McKenna’s Gold, Blume in Love, Breezy, General Hospital and Will & Grace, Shelley Morrison recently transitioned into the world of documentary film making. Her first documentary, Weaving the Past: Journey of Discovery, which she produced along with her husband (writer, producer and director Walter Dominguez), is a moving story about Walter’s attempt to trace the roots of his grandfather Emilio Hernandez.

Though it originally began as a family project, Weaving the Past soon evolved into a much bigger story that discusses not only Mexican-American history, but issues of social justice that are still relevant today. We’ll talk about the film, but we’ll also ask Shelley and Walter about some of the many mentors who continue to influence them today, including Eli Wallach, Robert Wise, Stanley Kramer and James Garner. Shelley Morrison and Walter Dominguez will join us in our second hour.

Michael Gleason, plus Recently Canceled Network Shows: Next on TVC

Television producer Michael Gleason and author Eddie Shapiro will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Best known as the co-creator and executive producer of the long-running private eye series Remington Steele, Michael Gleason’s career in television also spans the genres of Westerns, comedy, made for TV movies, and miniseries, including such shows as Maverick, Peyton Place, Rawhide, Diagnosis Murder, Cannon, McCloud, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Six Million Dollar Man, Nash Bridges, Lois and Clark, Diagnosis Murder, Rich Man, Poor Man: Book Two and Sword of Justice.

Michael recently published his first novel, Working Dirty, a private eye story set in a prison that also has some of the elements that made Remington Steele famous. We’ll talk about that, and more, when Michael Gleason joins us in our second hour.

Actress and producer Diane Baker, television writer Paul Robert Coyle, and author John McElwee will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Diane Baker will join us this week for Part 2 of our conversation about her career in film and television. Best known for her acting appearances in The Diary of Anne Frank, Marnie, Straight-Jacket, Route 66, The Invaders, House, Law and Order: SVU, The Fugitive, and other films and TV series, Diane is also an accomplished producer of many films and documentaries, including To Climb a Mountain for HBO and the Emmy-nominated miniseries A Woman of Substance starring Deborah Kerr. Currently, she is the Executive Director of the Motion Pictures & Television Acting School at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, one of the largest film schools in the country, and a position that she has held for more than ten years. 

We’ll ask Diane about how she first made the transition from acting to producing, as well as how she became involved with the Academy of Art University (and the school’s recent collaboration with director Roger Corman). But she’ll also share some memories of her work on The Diary of Anne Frank, Perry Mason, Kojak and other films and TV series. Diane Baker will join us in our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be our friend Paul Robert Coyle. Paul began his career as a television writer writing for The Streets of San Francisco and Barnaby Jones, plus he’s written for such shows as Crazy Like a Fox, Simon and Simon, Jake and the Fatman, Xena: Warrior Princess and Stephen King’s The Dead Zone.

Our first hour will feature John McElwee, curator of the Greenbriar Picture Shows movie website, and a consultant on many documentaries about the Golden Age of Hollywood. John’s book, Showmen, Sell It Hot! Movies as Merchandise in Golden Era Hollywood, examines the often innovative marketing campaigns for such classic motion pictures as Stagecoach, King Kong, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, Sunset Boulevard, On the Waterfront, Frankenstein, Dracula, A Night at the Opera and Rebel Without a Cause. The book includes hundreds of color and black-and-white photographs, plus great stories about the various ways in which movies were promoted in the era before television.

Actor Barry Livingston and author Dwayne Epstein will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

One of the few actors to make the transition from successful child star to successful grown-up actor, Barry Livingston parlayed his success as Ernie Douglas on My Three Sons into a steady career that he has seen him work with the likes of Myrna Loy, Karl Malden, John Cassavetes, Steve Railsback, Martin Landau, Forest Whitaker, Adam Sandler, Ben Affleck and, most recently, Clint Eastwood. In fact, Barry is one of the cast members of Jersey Boys, the critically acclaimed biopic directed by Clint Eastwood about the rise of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. We’ll ask Barry about working with Eastwood and other film and TV legends when he joins us in our second hour.

And speaking of legends, we’ll spend our first hour discussing the life and career of Lee Marvin, the Academy Award-winning film actor who became a household name partly as a result of television (and particularly the nourish 1950s crime drama M Squad).

Someone once said that the depth of Lee Marvin “never really came out until you saw him on the screen. You knew there had to be something inside him that could create images that he wanted to convey to you.” Though Marvin remained somewhat enigmatic until the day he died, a new book, Lee Marvin: Point Blank, explores the depth of Marvin the person to reveal a sensitive soul behind the persona of the hard-drinking man who lived life on his own terms. Dwayne Epstein, the author of Lee Marvin: Point Blank, will join us in our first hour.

Television writer/producer David Misch, makeup artist Karen Crane and author Rich Podolsky will join us as part of our Fourth of July edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

This week’s program will include highlights from our December 2013 conversation with Karen Crane, award-winning special effects makeup artist and the daughter of Bob Crane. Best known as the star of Hogan’s Heroes, the long-running CBS comedy series from the mid-1960s that currently airs on Me-TV, Bob Crane was also an accomplished drummer, not to mention an innovative radio personality whose influence on broadcasting can still be felt today. All of Crane’s accomplishments, however, were overshadowed by the gruesome nature of his murder on June 29, 1978; the unsolved status of the case; and his addiction to sex, which by all accounts the actor was trying to overcome at the time of his death.

Less talked about when it comes to Bob Crane is that he was a generous actor, a loving father, and a good friend to those who knew him. That is the Bob Crane that we will talk about when Karen Crane join us in our second hour.

This week’s show will also remember Gerry Goffin, the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame lyricist responsible for such iconic songs as “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Take Good Care of My Baby,” and “The Locomotion” — all of which Goffin co-wrote with his wife at the time, Carole King, and all of which were produced by legendary music impresario Don Kirshner.

You might recall that we talked at length about Gerry Goffin and Don Kirshner in June 2012, as part of our conversation with author Rich Podolsky. Rich’s book DON KIRSHNER: The Man with the Golden Ear tells the story of Aldon Music, the song publishing co-founded by Kirshner and Al Nevins that was not only responsible for some of the biggest hits in music history (including “On Broadway,” “Up on a Roof,” “One Fine Day,” “Go Away Little Girl,” “You Lost That Lovin Feeling,” “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover”), but also developed some of the greatest and most prolific songwriters and performers the music industry has ever known, including Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond, Connie Francis, Tony Orlando, Neil Sedaka, Howard Greenfield, Barry Mann, Jack Keller and, as mentioned, Gerry Goffin and Carole King. We’ll play highlights of our conversation with Rich Podolsky during our first hour.

Also in our first hour: We’ll replay part of our June 2012 conversation with longtime television writer and producer David Misch. (Mork and Mindy, Police Squad!, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman, Duckman.). David is the author of FUNNY: THE BOOK: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Comedy, an entertaining look at the art of comedy from every conceivable angle: historical, musical, psychological, philosophical and everything in between.
