Remembering Robin Williams and Jeffrey Hunter: Next on TVC

Tuesday, August 26th, 2014

Television writer/producer David Misch and authors Paul Green and Mary Ann Anderson will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio. Click on the Listen Live button at KSAV.org or hear us on the KSAV channel on CX Radio Brazil.

Our first hour will remember the life and legacy of Robin Williams, the Academy Award-winning actor who originally became a star as a result of ABC television series Mork & Mindy. Our guests will include television writer/producer David Misch (Police Squad!, Late Night with David Letterman, Duckman, Saturday Night Live,Funny: The Book). David began his career in television as a story editor on Mork & Mindy.

Paul Green will join us in our second hour for a look back at the life and career of Jeffrey Hunter, the actor best known for his starring roles as Martin Pawley in The Searchers, Christopher Pike in the original pilot episode of Star Trek, and Jesus Christ in Nicholas Ray’s King of Kings. Hunter’s sudden death in May 1969 was a shock to everyone who knew him and left many wondering what direction his life and career would have gone, had he lived. Some of those questions are answered in Paul’s latest book, Jeffrey Hunter: The Film, Television, Radio and Stage Performances, which we’ll discuss in our second hour.

Also joining us in our second hour will be author Mary Ann Anderson (Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera, The Making of The Hitch-Hiker Illustrated). Mary also knew Jeffrey Hunter; her mother, actress Emily McLaughlin, married Hunter just three months before he died.

America’s First Talk Show Host, the Era of Live Television and More: Next on TVC

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Broadcast legend Joe Franklin and author, playwright and director Julian David Stone will join us on a special encore edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio.

Credited with bringing the talk show genre to the early days of television, Joe Franklin is also recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the longest-running talk show in TV history, Joe Franklin’s Memory Lane, which aired on WABC-TV in New York, then later WWOR-TV (also in New York), for 41 consecutive years (1952-1993). It has been said that Joe Franklin has interviewed more than 300,000 people in his radio and TV career, ranging from top celebrities in the world of entertainment to local personalities, legendary stars from vaudeville and the silent movie era, and five U.S. presidents. That number continues to grow, because Joe is still very active today, hosting celebrity interviews every week for the Bloomberg Radio Network. Joe Franklin will join us in our second hour.

Also joining us for our conversation with Joe Franklin will be our friend Phil Gries. Phil helped put together Joe Franklin’s TV Audio Archives, a forthcoming CD that will feature more than 10 hours of highlights from the Memory Lane show. The CD will be released later in 2014, but you can pre-order it by contacting Rick Russo at this email address.

And speaking of the early days of television, Julian David Stone will join us in our first hour as we look back at the era of live TV, from complex dramas such as the anthology series Playhouse 90 to boisterous comedy/variety shows such as The Colgate Comedy Hour and Texaco Star Theatre. If you get a chance to watch some of the live shows from the Golden Age of Television, while everything seemed calm and controlled on camera, beyond the scenes there was usually craziness and drama going on that was often as compelling as the program themselves.

Julian captures that sense of madness and wonder in The Strange Birth, Short Life and Sudden Death of Justice Girl, an epic novel that not only brings to life the golden age of live television, but also explores the underside of early network TV and, particularly, the era of McCarthyism and the blacklist.

Plus: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with an expanded edition of This Week in TV History that includes a birthday salute to Barbara Eden.

Kevin Sorbo and Douglas Lieblein: Next on TVC

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Actor Kevin Sorbo and television writer/producer Douglas Lieblein will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Known around the world as the star of Hercules, the Legendary Journeys — the most-watched first-run syndicated TV show in the world throughout the 1990s, and a show that is still seen today in more than fifty countries —.Kevin Sorbo is also the star of God’s Not Dead, an inspirational story that weaves together multiple perspectives on faith, doubt and disbelief before culminating in a call to action. Now available on DVD, God’s Not Dead is also the highest grossing independent faith film of all time — a remarkable accomplishment, considering that the movie was made with little money. Kevin Sorbo joins us in our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be four-time Emmy nominated writer/producer Douglas Lieblein, whose credits include the Disney series Hannah Montana, the Teennick series Life With Boys, and the forthcoming Nickelodeon series Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn on Nickelodeon. Doug also just released his first novel, Flight of the Akero: The Book of Milo, a subversively comic, action-packed, science fiction, fantasy adventure for young adults, and adults who still think of themselves as young adults. Douglas Lieblein will join us in our first hour.

Plus: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with a brand new edition of This Week in TV History.

A Tribute to James Garner: Next on TVC

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

We’ll celebrate the life and career of James Garner on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio.

Whether you think of him as Jim Rockford, Bret Maverick, Grandpa Jim on 8 Simple Rules, Charlie Madison in The Americanization of Emily, Dr. Harold Lear in Heartsounds, Murphy in Murphy’s Romance, Noah Calhoun in The Notebook, his Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley, or his many other memorable roles in film and television, James Garner was one of those actors that you never got tired of watching. That’s one reason why his career spanned six decades — and his fan base spans an amazing four generations.

James Garner passed away on July 19, 2014. This week’s program will be devoted entirely to the iconic actor who, time and again, changed the way we looked at our film and TV heroes. We’ll play highlights from some of our previous conversations with the people who knew and worked with James Garner, including Jon Winokur (co-author of The Garner Files, Jim’s memoirs of his career in film and television), Emmy winners Roy Huggins (creator of Maverick, co-creator of The Rockford Files) and Stephen J. Cannell (co-creator of The Rockford Files), writer/producer Juanita Bartlett (Nichols, The Rockford Files), and a few other surprises. We’ll also read some of the emails and Facebook comments about Garner that you have posted over the past few weeks. Plus we’ll hear from James Garner himself, in the form of two rarely heard radio interviews.
