A Tribute to James Garner: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014

We’ll celebrate the life and career of James Garner on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

Whether you think of him as Jim Rockford, Bret Maverick, Grandpa Jim on 8 Simple Rules, Charlie Madison in The Americanization of Emily, Dr. Harold Lear in Heartsounds, Murphy in Murphy’s Romance, Noah Calhoun in The Notebook, his Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley, or his many other memorable roles in film and television, James Garner was one of those actors that you never got tired of watching. That’s one reason why his career spanned six decades — and his fan base spans an amazing four generations.

James Garner passed away on July 19, 2014. This week’s program will be devoted entirely to the iconic actor who, time and again, changed the way we looked at our film and TV heroes. We’ll play highlights from some of our previous conversations with the people who knew and worked with James Garner, including Jon Winokur (co-author of The Garner Files, Jim’s memoirs of his career in film and television), Emmy winners Roy Huggins (creator of Maverick, co-creator of The Rockford Files) and Stephen J. Cannell (co-creator of The Rockford Files), writer/producer Juanita Bartlett (Nichols, The Rockford Files), and a few other surprises. We’ll also read some of the emails and Facebook comments about Garner that you have posted over the past few weeks. Plus we’ll hear from James Garner himself, in the form of two rarely heard radio interviews.

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

Comedian Brian Copeland and author Joanna Wilson will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

A nationally known stand-up comedian, best-selling author, radio host and playwright, Brian Copeland is also the host of Now Brian Copeland, a pilot for a new syndicated talk show that will premiere on NBC stations in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 3, following coverage of the second NFL Wild Card game. Mickey Mouse, Lawrence Welk and The Bewitched Continuum: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Dancer Bobby Burgess, novelist Gil Bernard Anthony and authors Herbie J Pilato, Lorraine Santoli and Adam-Michael James will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

After several early TV appearances on such shows as Ozzie and Harriet, Bobby Burgess danced his way into becoming one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club, then went on to enjoy a longtime affiliation with Lawrence Welk that included more than two decades on The Lawrence Welk Show and appearances with members of Welk’s “musical family” that continue to this day. Bobby talks about his career in show business in his new memoir, Ears and Bubbles: Dancing My Way from The Mickey Mouse Club to The Lawrence Welk Show. Bobby Burgess will join us in our second hour, along with Lorraine Santoli, longtime Disney publicist and the author of such books as The Official Mickey Mouse Club Book.

Also joining us this week will be Herbie J Pilato. Herbie recently collaborated with Adam-Michael James on The Bewitched Continuum, a fun new book that takes a look at continuity issues in the world of Bewitched, from Sam and Darrin’s very first lines in the series to the number of times Endora refers to Darrin as Durwood, Dogwood, Dum-Dum and everything in between. Herbie and Mike will join us in our first hour.

Plus:Radio/TV journalist and novelist Gil Bernard Anthony (The Bolivar Solution) with some thoughts on the latest developments in the allegations against Bill Cosby; and Greg Ehrbar with some last-minute DVD gift ideas for the classic TV lover in your life. It’s a full program as always… we certainly hope you’ll join us.

Theodore Bikel: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

Actor, singer and poet Theodore Bikel and pianist Paul Cardall will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Known for his appearances in such films and television series as The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Columbo, All in the Family, The Defiant Ones and The African Queen, Theodore Bikel is also an accomplished stage actor, folk singer and poet who celebrated his 75th anniversary in show business earlier this year.

Theo recently released a new film, Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholem Aleichem, which combines Theo’s own storytelling with a broader exploration of Sholem Aleichem, a pioneer of modern Jewish literature whose stories about Teyve the Dairyman provided the basis for the Broadway play Fiddler on the Roof. Theodore Bikel has played Tevye on stage more than 2,100 times, while the collective works of Aleichem have always been an integral part of his life. The film is not only a very personal tribute, but in many ways is Theo’s legacy. Theodore Bikel will join us in our second hour.

Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholem Aleichem had its world premiere earlier this year in San Francisco, CA. Narrated by Alan Alda, and featuring on-camera interviews by the likes of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Gilbert Gottfried, Fyvush Finkel and Aleichem’s granddaughter Bel Kaufman (author of Up Down the Staircase), the film will be shown at several U.S. film festivals throughout 2015. For more information on upcoming screenings, visit http://www.jewishfilm.org.

Also joining us this week will be award-winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall. Paul’s music has been featured in many popular TV series, plus he recently scored the music for Earl Hamner: Storyteller, a forthcoming documentary about the life and career of the man behind The Waltons. Paul’s own life story has the kind of arc you would normally see in a made for TV movie (except, in Paul’s case, it’s true). Born with only half a heart, Paul underwent heart transplant surgery in September 2009 and went on to record a No. 1 Billboard album, earn a Steinway sponsorship… and scale a major U.S. mountain.

Paul recently released a new CD, Saving Tiny Hearts, the proceeds for which will help support the research of congenital heart defects. Paul Cardall will join us in our first hour.

Stanley Livingston: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Actor, director and producer Stanley Livingston will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

Known around the world as Chip Douglas on My Three Sons, the long-running TV sitcom that is still a staple on many cable channels today, Stanley Livingston is also the founder and CEO of The Actors Journey Project, an educational program for both aspiring actors and working actors that helps fill a crucial gap in the way that actors are educated. While many colleges, universities and acting academies teach the craft of acting, very few programs teach students about the business of acting — specifically, how to navigate the inner workings of the entertainment industry so that you can launch, advance and, most important, sustain a career in acting in the film and television industries.

The Actors Journey Project has two programs: The Actors Journey (for adult actors) and The Actors Journey for Kids (for parents of aspiring child actors). Both programs cover more than sixty topics and pool the wisdom of more than 100 entertainment industry professionals. We’ll ask Stan how he came to start The Actors Journey, as well as talk about his work with the likes of Ozzie Nelson, Jackie Cooper and, of course, Fred McMurray when he joins us in our second hour.

Also this week: We’ll play highlights from our conversation earlier this year with author Paul Green about the life and career of Roy Huggins. Plus: Greg Ehrbar with a new DVD report.
