James Sheldon: Next on TVC

Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

Television director James Sheldon will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org and the KSAV channel on CX Radio Brazil.

James Sheldon directed not only many of the great shows from the first forty years of network television, but virtually every kind of network television show imaginable, beginning with the very first commercial network program (We the People, telecast nationally on CBS on June 1, 1948), as well as live dramas, anthology shows, Westerns, sitcoms, action adventure, musicals, private eye shows, police dramas, legal dramas, nighttime soap operas, interview programs and everything in between, including such classic shows as Naked City, The Twilight Zone, Route 66, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, The Fugitive, My Three Sons, Family Affair, Batman, Ironside, Ellery Queen, Cagney and Lacey, Dallas, M*A*S*H, Sanford and Son, Room 222 and The Waltons. During that time Jim experienced many technological changes in television, plus he helped launch the careers of James Dean, Paul Newman, Carroll O’Connor, Clint Eastwood, Lee Remick, Tony Randall, Tyne Daly and many other actors.

Jim has captured dozens of stories about his life and career in television in an excellent book, Before I Forget: Directing Television, 1948-1988. James Sheldon will be joining us in our second hour.

Also this week: Greg Ehrbar’s latest DVD report, and Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with a brand new This Week in TV History.

Hollywood Through the Back Door, plus a Remembrance of Gary Owens: Next on TVC

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Author, playwright and film and television pioneer Michael St. John will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

The first African-American hired as a director for NBC television (where he worked on such shows as Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In and The Andy Williams Show), Michael St. John has also worked as a stage and film actor in such films as Carmen Jones, the first major Hollywood motion picture featuring an all African-American cast. Michael’s book, Hollywood Through the Back Door, is filled with great stories about his work with such legends as Pearl Bailey, Dorothy Dandridge, Mary Pickford, Bette Davis, Dan Dailey, Lou Gossett, Brock Peters, Harry Belafonte, and Otto Preminger — how they opened doors for him, and how he, in turn, paid it forward by creating opportunities for others.

Michael will not only share some of those stories, but update us on the pre-production of his play, I Feel Sin Comin’ On, which is based on early events in his life that are depicted in Hollywood Through the Back Door. He’ll also provide a few memories of his friend and colleague, Laugh-In announcer Gary Owens. Michael St. John will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with an expanded edition of This Week in TV History that includes a look at the origins of The Andy Griffith Show.

Felix and Oscar and Ida Lupino: Next on TVC

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

Authors Mary Ann Anderson and Bob Leszczak will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

Mary Ann Anderson will join us this week as we remember the life and career of Ida Lupino, the iconic actress and pioneering film director who was born on February 4, 1918. Mary’s books include Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera, the story of Ida’s life and career (in Ida’s own words), The Making of The Hitch-Hiker: Illustrated, a behind-the-scenes look at the classic 1953 film noir thriller directed by Ida Lupino, and Portrait of a Soap Star: The Emily McLaughlin Story. In addition to talking about Ida Lupino, we will hear from Ida herself, in the form of audio highlights from a 1991 interview with author A.M. Sperber in which Ida talks about her dear friend Humphrey Bogart. Mary Ann Anderson will join us in our first hour.

Also joining us this week will be Bob Leszczak. Bob’s books on music and television include Single Season Sitcoms: 1948-1979, Who Did It First: Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Cover Songs and Their Original Artists, and The Odd Couple on Stage and Screen, the latter of which is an encyclopedic look at The Odd Couple in all of its various forms over the past five decades (including the brand new TV version of The Odd Couple starring Matthew Perry that will debut on CBS on Thursday, Feb. 19). We’ll talk about the appeal of The Odd Couple, old and new, when Bob Leszczak joins in our first hour.

Plus: Greg Ehrbar with a new DVD report, and Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with a brand new edition of This Week in TV History.
