A Conversation with Walter Grauman: Next on TVC

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

We will remember the late Walter Grauman on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

This week’s program will remember Walter Grauman, the prolific film and television director who passed away on Friday, March 20. If you’re a fan of Quinn Martin, you know that Walter directed multiple episodes of almost every show that came out of QM Productions, including the pilot episodes of The Fugitive, Barnaby Jones and The Streets of San Francisco. But he also had a long and distinguished record independent of Quinn Martin, both as a producer (including the ABC dramas Felony Squad and Blue Light), as well as directing such notable miniseries and made for TV movies as To Race the Wind, Bare Essence, Crowhaven Farm, and Top of the Hill, plus multiple episodes of such popular shows as The Untouchables, Burke’s Law, Naked City, Route 66, Peter Gunn, Trapper John, M.D. and Murder, She Wrote.

You might recall that Walter Grauman appeared on TV CONFIDENTIAL back in March 2012, on the occasion of Walter’s 90th birthday. Paul Robert Coyle co-hosted. We covered many topics in the course of that 75-minute conversation, including how Walter more or less taught himself the craft of directing at a time when the television industry was just starting. We will replay that interview in its entirety during this week’s program.

Tuesday, March 24th, 2015

Actor George Maharis and author James Rosin will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

James Rosin has written a series of books on some of the great shows from the 1960s and 1970s, including Naked City, Peyton Place, The Streets of San Francisco and Wagon Train. Jim has recently updated his book on Route 66 with new information about the classic TV series starring Martin Milner and George Maharis. Jim will join us in our first hour.

And speaking of Route 66, our second hour will include highlights from our April 2012 conversation with George Maharis in which George discusses, among other things, how he approached playing Buz Murdock, as well as the real reason why he left Route 66 in the middle of the third season.

All this, plus a brand new edition of This Week in TV History. It’s a full program as always, and we certainly hope you’ll join us.

A Tribute to Leonard Nimoy: Next on TVC

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Actor Walter Koenig, television director Ralph Senensky, producer/director Arthur Marks and author Mark Dawidziak will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

This week’s program will be a two-hour tribute to the life and career of Leonard Nimoy, the actor known around the world as Mr. Spock, the half-Vulcan, half-human first officer on Star Trek who was not only one of the show’s most popular characters, but in many respects its most iconic. We will certainly talk about Star Trek, but we’ll also discuss some of Nimoy’s other contributions to television, as well as his accomplishments as a motion picture director; his dedication to science, art and the humanities; his various philanthropic interests; and who he was a person.

Our guests this week will include actor Walter Koenig (Leonard Nimoy’s longtime co-star on both the original Star Trek and the first six Star Trek movies), television director Ralph Senensky, who directed Nimoy on seven occasions on the original Star Trek (including the classic episode “This Side of Paradise”), Perry Mason producer/director Arthur Marks (a longtime friend of Nimoy who also directed him in the Mason episode “The Case of the Shoplifter’s Shoe”), and television critic and author Mark Dawidziak (The Columbo Phile).

Actor Chris Robinson, plus Hollywood’s Last Mogul: Next on TVC

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015

Actor/director Chris Robinson and award-winning journalist Kathleen Sharp will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Kathleen Sharp will join us for a look at the life and legacy of Hollywood’s original power couple, Lew and Edie Wasserman, who together ruled over the entertainment industry for more than six decades — first by building MCA, the world’s largest talent agency, then buying a broken-down film studio along with some real estate and transforming it all into the multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate known as Universal Studios. Under Lew Wasserman’s rule, Universal created such staples as the made for TV movie, the “wheel” format of revolving weekly series, and the blockbuster feature motion picture, while Edie Wasserman extended their influence into governors’ mansions, Senate chambers, the White House, international boardrooms and the world of old Las Vegas. But while Lew Wasserman ran Universal Studios, he and Edie were far from universally liked — in fact, on more than one occasion their rivals and enemies joined forces to bring the Wassermans down. It’s all part of a fascinating look into the inner workings of twentieth-century show business that Kathleen captures in her book Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood: Edie and Lew Wasserman and Their Entertainment Empire, which we’ll talk about during our second hour.

Also joining us this week will be actor/director Chris Robinson, Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital, Jack Hamilton on The Bold and the Beautiful, and Sgt. Sandy Komansky on Twelve O’Clock High. If you know your TV history, you know that Chris also appeared in many of the other shows produced by Quinn Martin (including The Fugitive, The New Breed, Dan August, The F.B.I., Cannon, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones and Caribe), as well as such films as The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Young Savages (both with Burt Lancaster), The Hawaiians (with Charlton Heston), Sweet, Sweet Rachel (the pilot for The Sixth Sense), and many Western films and TV series, including Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Wagon Train, Zane Grey Theater, and the recent independent film The Forsaken, which Chris says offers a new take on the classic genre that is also very insightful. We’ll talk about that, and more, when Chris Robinson joins us during our first hour.
