Remembering Theodore Bikel: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

We’ll replay our conversation with actor Theodore Bikel on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

We will dedicate the second hour of this week’s program to Theodore Bikel, the Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor, singer, songwriter, poet and recording artist and stage actor who passed away last week at the age of 91. Many of you know Theofrom his appearances in such films and television series as The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Columbo, All in the Family, The Defiant Ones, The African Queen, and The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming. But he also created the role of Captain von Trapp in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music, plus he played Tevye on Fiddler on the Roof more than 2,100 times on Broadway and elsewhere.

We had the opportunity to talk to Theo on two occasions last year, including once in which we discussed the release of Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholem Aleichem, a documentary that combines Theo’s own storytelling with a broader exploration of Sholem Aleichem, a pioneer of modern Jewish literature whose stories about Teyve the Dairyman provided the basis for Fiddler on the Roof. The collective works of Aleichem played an integral part in Theo’s life, while Theo himself described the documentary as his legacy. We’ll replay both of our conversations with Theodore Bikel in our second hour.

Also this week: A new DVD report and an expanded edition of This Week in TV History.

Kathy Coleman, plus an Animation Giant: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Actress and author Kathy Coleman and Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Jymn Magon will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

If you watched Saturday morning television in the mid 1970s, you’ll remember Kathy Coleman as Holly Marshall on Land of the Lost, one of the first, and one of the most successful, live action children’s shows ever made. Kathy faced all sorts of peril every week on Land of the Lost, but that was nothing compared to her life outside of television, which included incidents of sexual abuse, spousal abuse, being left to die in the middle of nowhere on more than one occasion, and the trauma of learning that she was born out of wedlock. Kathy has faced more obstacles in her life than anyone since Job, yet through it all, she has remained upbeat with the help of faith, family and friends. Kathy shares her story in LOST GIRL: The Truth and Nothing But the Truth, So Help Me Kathleen, an inspiring yet controversial new book, which we will talk about when she joins us in our second hour.

Kathy Coleman will be appearing at Galacticon 4 in Seattle, Washington from July 31 thru Aug. 2. She’ll also be at this year’s official Star Trek convention, Aug. 6 thru Aug. 9 at the Rio Suites Hotel in Las Vegas.

Also joining us this week will be Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Jymn Magon, a man whom our friend (and resident animation historian) Greg Ehrbar considers to be one of the true giants in the animation and recording industries. Jymn spent seventeen years at Walt Disney Studios (where, among other things, he helped revive Disney’s Buena Vista Records label) before moving on to Walt Disney TV Animation, where he created, story edited, and wrote for such shows as Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop, and The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Jymn will share a few stories about his career — including the time in which he briefly collaborated with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas — when he joins us in our first hour.

Jymn Magon will be appearing at D-23 Expo 2015, Aug. 14 thru Aug. 16 at the Anaheim Convention Center. For more information, go to D23.com/d23-expo/

The Man Behind My Cousin Vinny: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

Screenwriter, director and producer Dale Launer and author and attorney Lori Rassas will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

The son of S. John Launer (the actor who played the judge on Perry Mason more than anyone else), Dale Launer got his first break as a writer after the producing team of Lancaster/Wagner optioned his screenplay of Ruthless People, which was produced and released in 1986. He also wrote the screenplay for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, then later wrote and produced My Cousin Vinny — the now classic comedy that the American Bar Association considers one of the greatest legal movies ever made. Many law classes often point to My Cousin Vinny for its portrayal of legal procedure, while Dale’s character, Vincent Gambini, was once ranked among The 25 Greatest Fictional Lawyers Not Named Atticus Finch.

We will ask Dale about My Cousin Vinny, but we’ll also talk about some of the other issues that screenwriters face today, including the battle over possessory credits and the common misconception among the general public as to what a screenwriter actually does. Dale Launer will join us in our second hour.

Speaking of legal procedure, also joining us this week will be Lori Rassas. Recently featured on CNBC’s Power Lunch, Lori is an employment attorney, teacher and coach with close to two decades of experience representing both employers and employees in all aspects of employment relations. Earlier in her career, she was staff counsel for AFTRA, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, so she has hands-on knowledge of many issues that artists face today. Her latest book is The Perpetual Paycheck: 5 Secrets to Getting a Job, Keeping a Job, and Earning Income for Life in the Loyalty-Free Workplace. Lori Rassas will join us in our first hour.

Lindsay Wagner, Robert Colbert, and the Hollywood Museum: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 7th, 2015

Actors Lindsay Wagner and Robert Colbert and Hollywood Museum president Donelle Dadigan will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

Emmy Award-winning actress Lindsay Wagner first came to prominence in the Oscar-winning movie The Paper Chase (1973), and remains an icon to women to this day through her portrayal of Jaime Sommers on The Bionic Woman and the Bionic TV-movies. But Jaime Sommers is just one chapter in a storied career that has seen Lindsay star in more than 40 movies, five miniseries and several feature films and specials. Lindsay will share some memories of her career in film and TV when she joins us at the first of our first hour.

Lindsay Wagner will be appearing at the historic Tudor House Theater in Lake Arrowhead, CA on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 in a special show called More Than a Bionic Woman: An Evening with Lindsay Wagner. Dinner options are available for both performances. Purchase a premium ticket and you’ll have an opportunity to meet Lindsay after each show. For tickets and more information, go to LindsayWagnerInternational.com.

Our second hour will include a return appearance from Robert Colbert, the actor known around the world as Doug Phillips on The Time Tunnel. Soap opera fans know Bob as Stuart Brooks on The Young and the Restless, while fans of the old Warner Bros. shows know him from his appearances on Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, Hawaiian Eye, Bourbon Street Beat, 77 Sunset Strip and, of course, Maverick.

Robert Colbert will be appearing at the next Hollywood Show, which will take place July 31 to Aug. 2 at The Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel, 5400 West Century Blvd. in Los Angeles. For more information, go to HollywoodShow.com.

Also on this week’s program: Now that July is upon us, many of you may be thinking about spending part of your vacation in Los Angeles. With that in mind, our first hour will also feature a conversation with Donelle Dadigan, founder and president of the Hollywood Museum, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Among the exhibits this summer at the Hollywood Museum are MARILYN: The Exhibit, an intimate look at the life and legacy of Marilyn Monroe, and REEL to REAL: Portrayals and Perceptions of Gays in Hollywood. MARILYN: The Exhibit runs through Monday, Sept. 6, while REEL to REAL runs through the end of September.

Plus: We will announce the winner of our Hogan’s Heroes book giveaway. It’s a full program, as always. We certainly hope you’ll join us.
