A Tribute to Leonard Nimoy: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 29th, 2015

Actor Walter Koenig, television director Ralph Senensky, producer/director Arthur Marks and author Mark Dawidziak will join us on an encore edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

This week’s program will be an encore presentation of our two-hour tribute to the life and career of Leonard Nimoy, the actor known around the world as Mr. Spock, the half-Vulcan, half-human first officer on Star Trek who was not only one of the show’s most popular characters, but in many respects its most iconic. We will certainly talk about Star Trek, but we’ll also discuss some of Nimoy’s other contributions to television, as well as his accomplishments as a motion picture director; his dedication to science, art and the humanities; his various philanthropic interests; and who he was a person.

Our guests this week will include actor Walter Koenig (Leonard Nimoy’s longtime co-star on both the original Star Trek and the first six Star Trek movies), television director Ralph Senensky, who directed Nimoy on seven occasions on the original Star Trek (including the classic episode “This Side of Paradise”), Perry Mason producer/director Arthur Marks (a longtime friend of Nimoy who also directed him in the Mason episode “The Case of the Shoplifter’s Shoe”), and television critic and author Mark Dawidziak (The Columbo Phile).

Inside the Disney Marketing Machine: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 15th, 2015

Author Lorraine Santoli will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Lorraine Santoli began her career as a publicist for the Walt Disney Company, coordinating the PR efforts of many Disney movies and TV shows, then later became manager of publicity at the Disneyland theme park. After moving back to Disney Corporate, she spent ten years as Director of Corporate Synergy for the entire Walt Disney Company, where she helped coordinate all marketing communications and internal cross-promotions through the Disney company.

We will talk about what synergy is, how it came to shape the way in which Disney has done business over the past three decades, and how it helped shaped such promotional campaigns as the famous “I’m Going to Disneyland” spots that we see at the end of every Super Bowl and other major sporting events. Lorraine Santoli will join us on in our second hour. Her latest book, Inside the Disney Marketing Machine: In the Era of Michael Eisner and Frank Wells, is available from Theme Park Press.

Bo Svenson: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

Actor, director and producer Bo Svenson will join us for the 300th edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Though his roots in television go back to the ABC series Here Come the Brides, as well as many made-for-TV movies, Bo Svenson is known for his work in such feature films as Breaking Point, The Great Waldo Pepper, North Dallas Forty, Heartbreak Ridge, Kill Bill, Delta Force, Walking Tall: Part 2, Walking Tall: The Final Chapter and the original Inglorious Basterds. Also an accomplished writer, director and producer (both for film and television), on many occasions Bo was brought in as a director at the last minute to rescue troubled productions.

Bo is also an accomplished martial artist, holding black belts in karate, aikido and judo―an experience that gives him tremendous insight into the subject of his upcoming film Don’t Call Me Sir, the inspiring story of groundbreaking judo legend Rusty Kanokogi, which will also feature the acting debut of Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison. Bo Svenson will join us in our second hour. (For more information on Don’t Call Me Sir, as well as to how to help support the project, go to SupportDontCallMeSir.com.)

This week will mark not only the 300th broadcast of TV CONFIDENTIAL, but the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frank Sinatra. We will commemorate the latter occasion by playing highlights from conversations in which we’ve discussed the legacy of Ole Blue Eyes, both as a singer and as an actor, with some of our previous guests.

Remembering Pete Duel and John Lennon: Next on TVC

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015

Author Paul Green will join us again on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday 7pm ET and PT on
Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Paul Green will return this week as we revisit the life and career of Pete Duel, the actor whom most of us think of as Hannibal Heyes, the amiable outlaw that he played so well on the short-lived but long remembered Western series Alias Smith and Jones. Though Duel seemed easygoing on screen, he led an unpredictable and often tumultuous life off screen―a fact, sadly, that is perhaps best characterized by his highly publicized suicide on Dec. 30, 1971, at the height of his television celebrity.

Though the story of Pete Duel remains one of the great Hollywood tragedies, it’s also a reminder that the true value of a person rests not in the manner of their death, but in the way they lived their life and continue to touch the lives of the people of who knew them. That’s really the focus of Paul’s book, Pete Duel: A Biography. Paul has recently updated his book with a new foreword by actress Belinda Montgomery, plus even more insight about the life of Duel. Much of the new information in the revised second edition of Pete Duel: A Biography comes from the people who knew him best: his family and friends. But it also gives voice to the many fans who have kept the memory of Pete Duel alive, more than four decades after his death. Paul Green will join us in our second hour.

This week’s program will also commemorate the thirty-fifth anniversary of the death of John Lennon. We’ll devote part of This Week in TV History to that subject, plus we’ll play part of our December 2010 conversation with Keith Eliot Greenberg, author of Dec. 8, 1980: The Day John Lennon Died.
