Tom Dreesen: Next on TVC

Tuesday, September 27th, 2016

Comedian Tom Dressen and Emmy Award-winning writer Vince Waldron will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision RadioKSAV.org.

This week’s show will include a return appearance by comedian Tom Dreesen, the longtime opening act for Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. who has also been a fixture on late night television, particularly The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Late Show with David Letterman. Tom was recently honored by the Radio and Television Museum in Chicago for his nearly five-decade career in show business. A much sought-after motivational speaker and master of ceremonies, he is also the co-author of Tim and Tom: An American Comedy in Black and White, the story of his partnership with Tim Reid in the late ‘60s and early 1970s as America’s first, and only, interracial comedy team. Tom Dreesen will join us in our second hour.

Television historian Vince Waldron will join us in our first hour for Part 2 of our behind-the-scenes look at The Dick Van Dyke Show. Vince’s book The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book, Deluxe Expanded Archive Edition: The Definitive History of Television’s Most Enduring Comedy Series tells you everything you wanted to know about the most acclaimed comedy series of TV’s golden age, as seen through the eyes of Dick Van Dyke, Carl Reiner, Mary Tyler Moore, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Larry Mathews, and other cast and crew members. We’ll talk about the “capri pants” controversy, how the show embodies the changing face of television in the 1960s, the contributions of writers Sam Denoff and Bill Persky (and how that led to more on-screen time for Carl Reiner as Alan Brady), and more.

Ken Levine, plus a tribute to Hugh O’Brian: Next on TVC

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016

Emmy Award-winning writer, producer and director Ken Levine returns on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

The Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, and director of such classic shows as M*A*S*H, Cheers, Frasier, The Simpsons and Everybody Loves Raymond, Ken Levine is also an award-winning radio host and former Major League Baseball broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners. If you follow baseball on any level, you know that the game, in many ways, is a reflection of life itself. Ken takes that idea a step further in Going Going Gone, a new play that explores our need to be remembered in a world that focuses on celebrating milestones. Though set against the backdrop of sports, Going Going Gone has elements that will remind you of Norm, Cliff and some of the other barflies on Cheers. We’ll ask Ken about that, plus we’ll talk about the influence of Garry Marshall early in his writing career, what Vin Scully mean to him personally (and to baseball fans in general), and more. Ken Levine joins us in our second hour.

If you listen to us in Los Angeles, or are planning a trip to L.A. during October and would like to take in a night at the theatre, Going Going Gone will be performed on Saturdays and Sunday at the Hudson Guild Theatre, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles beginning Oct. 1 and continuing through Nov. 6. For tickets and more information, call (323) 960-5521 or go to www.plays411.com/gone.

Our first hour will include highlights from our January 2015 conversation with actor, author and philanthropist Hugh O’Brian (The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, The Shootist, Hugh O’Brian… or What’s Left of Him). Plus, and speaking of Vin Scully, with the Hall of Fame broadcaster winding down his storied career as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers later this month, we will mark the occasion by playing an excerpt from our three-part tribute to Scully’s early career, including highlights from his work in 1957, the final season of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Rita Lakin, plus Fifty Years of Star Trek: Next on TVC

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016

Television writer/producer Rita Lakin will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

This week’s program will include a return visit from pioneering television writer/producer Rita Lakin. Rita not only spent more than two decades in television writing and producing such shows as Dr. Kildare, Peyton Place, The Mod Squad, Dynasty and The Movie of the Week, but was one of the first solo female writers in network television — at a time when the industry was still almost entirely run by men. Though she didn’t know it at the time, Rita helped pave the way for many women behind the scenes in film and TV today. She speaks candidly about her experiences in her memoir, The Only Woman in the Room: Episodes from My Life and Career as a Television Writer. Rita Lakin will join us in our second hour.

Rita Lakin will be appearing at the Sperber Community Library at American Jewish University on Thursday, September 15 beginning at 7:30pm. Rita will be in conversation that night with Howard Rosenberg, Pulitzer Prize-winning TV critic for the Los Angeles Times. Admission is $11. For tickets and more information, call (310) 440-1572 or go to wcce.aju.edu. Rita will also be appearing at the Beverly Hills Public Library Auditorium on Sunday, September 18 beginning at 2pm. Admission for that event is free. For more information, call (310) 288-2200. For news on other upcoming events, go to RitaLakin.com.

Our first hour will include a special expanded edition of This Week of TV History that discusses the golden anniversary of the premiere of the original Star Trek, and the various ways in which the Star Trek franchise continues to influence our culture.
