Richard Pryor Jr., Audrey Walters, plus the “other” Merv Griffin Show: Next on TVC

Monday, March 25th, 2019

Actor, singer, and storyteller Richard Pryor Jr., actress and entrepreneur Audrey Walters, and author Steve Randisi will join us this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org

The eldest son of iconic comedian Richard Pryor and his first wife, Patricia Watts, Richard Pryor Jr. is a man whose self-described “freakish life” paralleled that of his famous father in more ways than you can imagine—including being raised in a whorehouse in Peoria, Illinois to overcoming physical abuse, verbal abuse, bouts with alcohol and drug addiction, struggles with his true sexual identity, and frequent bad decisions. Being the son of a celebrity, Richard also struggled with something that few people can ever really understand: wondering whether people liked him for who he was, or because of who his father was.

Through it all, however, Richard Pryor Jr. not only overcame these obstacles, but thrived. He continues to perform today, while also serving as an inspiration to those who have struggled with addiction or survived abusive relationships. Richard shares his life story in a new book, In a Pryor Life, which we’ll tell you about when he joins us in our second hour.

For our listeners in the Midwest, Richard Pryor Jr. will appear at the Bradley University Student Center Atrium in Peoria, Illinois on Wednesday, April 10 beginning at 4pm and at the Olde Town Tap in Altoona, Iowa on Friday, April 12, also beginning at 4pm. For more information on these events, or to book Richard for a future event, go to InAPryorLife.com.

This week’s show will also include a return appearance by actress and entrepreneur Audrey Walters. Audrey can be currently seen in Walk. Ride. Rodeo, the new Netflix original motion picture that is based on the inspiring story of Amberley Snyder, the teenage champion barrel racer who became paralyzed from the waist down due to a near fatal car accident, only to defy the odds and return to racing less than a year after her accident.

Audrey has a supporting role in Walk. Ride. Rodeo, but in a way, her character is pivotal. We’ll tell you what we mean by that, plus we’ll talk about some of Audrey’s other film and TV projects, plus the latest developments behind Talk to the Camera, the youth workshop that Audrey co-founded, which helps elementary and middle school children develop their social communication skills. Audrey Walters will also join us in our second hour.

Plus: Phil Gries will join us for a special edition of The Sounds of Lost Television that will spotlight the short-lived but critically acclaimed version of The Merv Griffin Show that aired on NBC daytime between October 1962 and March 1963—a show that not only brought a Tonight Show sensibility to two o’clock in the afternoon, but won approval from critics, intellectuals and college students alike. In many respects, the NBC Merv Griffin Show catapulted Merv’s career, paving the way for his iconic run in first-run syndication (first for Westinghouse, then for Metromedia), while also cementing his relationship with NBC, the network for which he originally created the long-running game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

Joining Phil will be Steve Randisi, author of The Merv Griffin Show: The Inside Story, a complete history of The Merv Griffin Show on television that also provides a capsule history of late night television in general, plus insight into Merv Griffin the person, personality, producer, and media mogul.

The Return of Biffle and Shooster: Next on TVC

Wednesday, March 20th, 2019

Actors Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria and writer, producer and director Michael Schlesinger will join us this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria are the stars, and Michael Schlesinger is the writer, producer and director of The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster—a bona fide, authentic and very funny DVD collection of 1930s-style comedies that pay homage to The Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy and other vintage comedy teams from the Golden Era of Hollywood. The Biffle and Shooster shorts were filmed over the last five years—yet they look and sound as if they were actually unearthed from the 1930s. Will Ryan, Nick Santa Maria and Michael Schlesinger will join us in our first hour.

Recently named “Best DVD of the year” by Bottom Shelf Movies, The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster is a collection of five comedy shorts (all but one of which was filmed in black and white), including “The Biffle Murder Case,” “Imitation of Wife,” “Schmo Boat,” “Bride of Finklestein,” and “It’s a Frame Up,” while guests stars include H.M. Wynant, Andrew Parks, Robert Forster and Robert Picardo, plus one of the final screen appearances of Dick Miller. Nominated for two Rondo Awards (including a nod for Best Package of DVD Extras), the Biffle and Shooster DVD also includes an additional short (“First Things Last”), more than an hour of bloopers and outtakes, a 1962-style “reunion” interview that Will and Nick perform in character as Biffle and Shooster, and more. (“The Biffle Murder Case,” “Imitation of Wife,” “Schmo Boat” and “Bride of Finklestein” are also available for viewing on demand on Amazon, Vudu and other streaming platforms, under the umbrella title The Adventures of Biffle and Shooster.)

For our listeners in Southern California, Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria will perform live as Biffle and Shooster at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena, CA on Sunday, March 31 beginning at 7pm. The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster DVD will be available for purchase that evening, as will the latest issue of the Biffle and Shooster comic book and the new book, The Biffle and Shooster Portable Guide to Etiquette. For tickets and more information, call (626) 798-6236 or visit the Calendar page at CoffeeGallery.com.

This week’s program will also include a remembrance of actress Beverley Owen (The Munsters). Plus: This Week in TV History.
