Gabrielle Stone, plus The Drive and Ambition of Gene Roddenberry: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

Actress, director, and author Gabrielle Stone will join us, along with screenwriter and Gene Roddenberry biographer Marc Cushman, for a brand new edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

When she last joined us on TV Confidential, Gabrielle Stone was experiencing a professional high, having made her directorial debut and won several awards and much critical acclaim for her short film It Happened Again Last Night. Behind the scenes, however, Gabrielle was experiencing a lot of personal turmoil and emotional upheaval, including a separation and eventual divorce from her husband after she found out he’d been cheating on her.

Later that summer, Gabrielle met another man, fell madly in love, and was about to embark on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy with her new love when he shockingly told her at the last minute that he did not want her to go with him—that he needed to go by himself. That left Gabrielle with two choices: Stay home and be miserable, or take a chance and travel for a month on her own. Gabrielle not only made her trip, but found herself thrust into a world of discovery that helped her regain control of her life. We’ll ask Gabrielle about her adventure in Europe, plus we’ll talk about her upcoming collaboration with her mom, actress Dee Wallace, and more when she joins us in our second hour.

Gabrielle Stone’s new book, Eat, Pray, #FML, asks the question “What do you do when you find your life has fallen apart and your heart has been ripped out and stepped on twice in two months?” In Gabrielle’s case, the answer was to get out of her comfort zone by going on a wild adventure, doing a lot of soul searching, and ultimately learning how to love and accept herself with the help of two tools: A Thought Onion and something she calls a “self-love” cocktail. Gabrielle’s story will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced an emotional gut punch—whether you’re male or female, and no matter what your age.

This week’s show will also include a return appearance by Marc Cushman, award-winning screenwriter, director, producer, documentary maker and, without question, the definitive chronicler of all things Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry. Last time Marc was on, we discussed his biography on Gene Roddenberry that particularly focused on the career of the Great Bird of the early 1970s. This week we’ll take a deep dive into the early career of Gene Roddenberry and the development of Star Trek itself.

In the early 1980s, Marc obtained permission from Roddenberry and Robert H. Justman, one of the producers of the original Star Trek, to write the definitive history of Star Trek: The Original Series. Along the way they provided Marc with access to the production files, personal papers of Gene Roddenberry, and other documentation that had never been shared with the public. The end result is a three-volume series of books, called These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series, each of which not only provides a comprehensive biography/history of each season of the original Star Trek, but transports you back in time to the era in which the original series was made as much as any book possibly can. Marc Cushman will join us in our first hour.

Volume 1 of These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series was recently updated and expanded to include an additional eighty pages of information. Not only that, it is also available as an audiobook.

Kate Linder, plus TV Stars Who Sing: Next on TVC

Monday, July 1st, 2019

Actress Kate Linder and authors Mary Ann Anderson and  Bob Leszczak will join us for a special holiday weekend edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

If you follow The Young and the Restless, you know Kate Linder as Esther Valentine, the faithful housekeeper and confidante that she has played on the top-rated CBS daytime drama since 1982. What you may not know is that Kate has also been a leading double life of sorts over the past thirty-three years. We’ll talk about, and more, when Kate Linder joins us in our second hour.

Co-hosting that hour will be our friend (and Kate’s friend) Mary Ann Anderson. Mary’s books on film and television include Mr. Adams and Eve: Illustrated (now available in hardcover) and Ida Lupino: Beyond the Camera, the story of Ida’s life and career.

And speaking of double lives, this week’s show will also include a return appearance from music and TV historian Bob Leszczak. Bob’s latest book, From Small Screen to Vinyl: A Guide to Television Stars Who Made Records, 1950-2000, is an encyclopedic look at hundreds of stars who performed double duty as TV performers and recording artists ― from legitimate crossover artists such as Rick Nelson and Annette Funicello, to the type of records that you have to hear to believe. The book includes exclusive interviews with Carol Burnett, Joyce Bulifant, Tom Kennedy, Bill Anderson, Rosey Grier, Paul Petersen, Stanley Livingston, Bill Mumy, Andrea Marcovicci and many, many others, plus Bob gives you a look at the drama that went on backstage as some of these stars tried to tackle different media. Bob Leszczak will join us in our first hour.
