Darby Hinton, plus The TV Career of Biffle & Shooster: Next on TVC

Monday, July 29th, 2019

Actors Darby Hinton, Will Ryan, and Nick Santa Maria, and producer/director Michael Schlesinger will join us this weekend for a brand new TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio,  KSAV.org

Known to three generations of television viewers as Israel Boone on the long-running family Western drama Daniel Boone, Darby Hinton has spent his entire life in show business. Both his father and his grandfather were actors, while Darby himself has appeared in countless other film, TV and stage productions—including the recent award-winning movie Wild Faith, a post-Civil War drama about a Union soldier who comes back to his home town in Michigan to start a new life, despite a world around him that is resisting change. Filmed on location in Michigan, Wild Faith has a timeless message of faith and hope that is also incredibly timely. We’ll tell you what we mean by that when Darby Hinton joins us in our second hour.

Darby Hinton is also one of the producers and one of the stars of Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws, a Wild West action adventure that also features Johnny Crawford, Keith Carradine, and a passel of other Western actors. For our listeners in Southern California, Darby will appear at a special benefit screening of Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws that will take place Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Joel McCrea Ranch in Thousand Oaks, California. All proceeds from this event will benefit actor Johnny Crawford in his fight against Alzheimer’s disease. For tickets and more information, visit DarbyHinton.com.

Darby Hinton will be appearing at this year’s WesternLegendsRoundUp.com in Knab, Utah on August 15, 16, and 17; The Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland on Sept. 12, 13, and 14;the Lone Pine Film Festival in historic Lone Pine, California on October 10, 11, and 12; and the Happy Trails Virginia Style Western convention in Roanoke, Virginia on October 17, 18, and 19. For more information on these and other upcoming events, visit DarbyHinton.com.

Also this week: We will welcome back Will Ryan, Nick Santa Maria, and Michael Schlesinger. Will and Nick are the stars—and Mike, the writer, producer and director—of The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster, the Rondo Award-nominated DVD collection of original, authentically-made 1930s-style comedies starring the greatest comedy team, Benny Biffle and Sammy Shooster, that never actually existed. The Biffle and Shooster shorts were filmed over the last five years, but they look and sound as if they were actually unearthed from the 1930s—plus they’re side-splittingly hilarious.

Will and Nick will appear this week in character as we take a look at Biffle and Shooster’s often overlooked, but nonetheless significant television career of the 1960s. You’ll be amazed at just how many legendary TV moments the boys almost helped create. Will Ryan and Nick Santa Maria will join us as Biffle and Shooster in our first hour.

A collection of five comedy shorts (all but one of which was filmed in black and white), The Misadventures of Biffle and Shooster is now available on DVD; four of the shorts (“The Biffle Murder Case,” “Imitation of Wife,” “Schmo Boat,” and “Bride of Finklestein”) are also available for viewing on demand on Amazon, Vudu, and other streaming platforms, under the umbrella title The Adventures of Biffle and Shooster. In addition, the new Biffle and Shooster book, The Biffle and Shooster Portable Guide to Etiquette, is available for purchase, as are all four issues of the Biffle and Shooster comic book.

Kathy Garver, Jason Stuart, and the Vision of Gene Roddenberry: Next on TVC

Monday, July 15th, 2019

Actress and voice artist Kathy Garver, actor and comedian Jason Stuart, and screenwriter and Gene Roddenberry biographer Marc Cushman will join us this weekend TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Known around the world as Cissy Davis on Family Affair, Kathy Garver is about to start production on Aunt Cissy, a new TV series that not only brings viewers up to date on Cissy’s life after Family Affair, but has elements of such modern shows as Modern Family. Kathy will give us a glimpse of her new show, plus we’ll talk about some of her other upcoming projects (including playing a “mob mother” in the forthcoming movie The Hard Edge), as well as her efforts on behalf of A Minor Consideration, the non-profit support and assistance foundation, founded by Paul Petersen, that helps child stars past, present and future make the often difficult transition from child acting to adult life. Kathy Garver will join us in our first hour.

Kathy Garver will be appearing at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend (July 18-21), plus she’ll be taking part in a Child Stars Cruise to Ensenada in December 2019. Visit her website for more information on these and other events on her calendar. Kathy’s latest book, Holiday Recipes for a Family Affair, is now available through Bear Manor Media.

One of the first openly gay stand-up comedians, Jason Stuart is also an accomplished character actor with more than 150 film and TV credits, including My Wife and Kids, Kindergarten Cop, Murder She Wrote, Judd Apatow’s Love, and, more recently, the indie films Abducted, Immortal, and The Infiltrator, and Nate Parker’s searing drama Birth of a Nation. Jason has been performing stand-up for more than thirty years, but he did not find his piece of ground as a comedian until he started doing stand-up material about being gay. We’ll talk about, and more (including the proper inflection to have when saying the name of his new book, Shut Up! I’m Talking), when Jason Stuart will join us in our second hour.

For our listeners in Southern California, Jason Stuart will be performing stand-up at Comedy Pop-Up in Lomita, California on Saturday, July 20. He will also sign copies of Shut Up! I’m Talking: Coming Out in Hollywood and Making It to the Middle at Book Soup in Hollywood on Friday, Aug. 2 along with special guest Alexandra Paul (Alexandra Paul wrote the foreword to Shut Up! I’m Talking), and at Comedy Central Stage Sit and Spin at the Hudson Theatre in Hollywood on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Also this week: Part 2 of our conversation with Marc Cushman, author of These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series, the definitive, three-volume biography of Star Trek: The Original Series that truly goes where no book on film or television has gone before, transporting you back in time to the era in which the original series was made as much as any book possibly can. Among other topics, we’ll talk about what a visionary Gene Roddenberry early in his career, above and beyond Star Trek, as well as the integral role that Lucille Ball played in getting Star Trek on the air. Volume 1 of These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series was recently updated and expanded to include an additional eighty pages of information. Not only that, it is also available as an audiobook.

Gabrielle Stone, plus The Drive and Ambition of Gene Roddenberry: Next on TVC

Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

Actress, director, and author Gabrielle Stone will join us, along with screenwriter and Gene Roddenberry biographer Marc Cushman, for a brand new edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

When she last joined us on TV Confidential, Gabrielle Stone was experiencing a professional high, having made her directorial debut and won several awards and much critical acclaim for her short film It Happened Again Last Night. Behind the scenes, however, Gabrielle was experiencing a lot of personal turmoil and emotional upheaval, including a separation and eventual divorce from her husband after she found out he’d been cheating on her.

Later that summer, Gabrielle met another man, fell madly in love, and was about to embark on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy with her new love when he shockingly told her at the last minute that he did not want her to go with him—that he needed to go by himself. That left Gabrielle with two choices: Stay home and be miserable, or take a chance and travel for a month on her own. Gabrielle not only made her trip, but found herself thrust into a world of discovery that helped her regain control of her life. We’ll ask Gabrielle about her adventure in Europe, plus we’ll talk about her upcoming collaboration with her mom, actress Dee Wallace, and more when she joins us in our second hour.

Gabrielle Stone’s new book, Eat, Pray, #FML, asks the question “What do you do when you find your life has fallen apart and your heart has been ripped out and stepped on twice in two months?” In Gabrielle’s case, the answer was to get out of her comfort zone by going on a wild adventure, doing a lot of soul searching, and ultimately learning how to love and accept herself with the help of two tools: A Thought Onion and something she calls a “self-love” cocktail. Gabrielle’s story will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced an emotional gut punch—whether you’re male or female, and no matter what your age.

This week’s show will also include a return appearance by Marc Cushman, award-winning screenwriter, director, producer, documentary maker and, without question, the definitive chronicler of all things Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry. Last time Marc was on, we discussed his biography on Gene Roddenberry that particularly focused on the career of the Great Bird of the early 1970s. This week we’ll take a deep dive into the early career of Gene Roddenberry and the development of Star Trek itself.

In the early 1980s, Marc obtained permission from Roddenberry and Robert H. Justman, one of the producers of the original Star Trek, to write the definitive history of Star Trek: The Original Series. Along the way they provided Marc with access to the production files, personal papers of Gene Roddenberry, and other documentation that had never been shared with the public. The end result is a three-volume series of books, called These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series, each of which not only provides a comprehensive biography/history of each season of the original Star Trek, but transports you back in time to the era in which the original series was made as much as any book possibly can. Marc Cushman will join us in our first hour.

Volume 1 of These Are The Voyages: Star Trek The Original Series was recently updated and expanded to include an additional eighty pages of information. Not only that, it is also available as an audiobook.
