Fifty Years of The Graduate: Next on TVC

Authors Beverly Gray and Wesley Hyatt and comedy scholar Chris Korman will join us this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio,

Dec. 21, 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Graduate, the Academy Award-winning film that was not only a surprise blockbuster when it was originally released in 1967, but has since burned itself indelibly on American popular culture. The Graduate put Mike Nichols on the map as a director, made Dustin Hoffman a star, influenced a new generation of filmmakers (including George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and Ron Howard) and, in many ways, changed the way in which movies were marketed while signaling the end of the studio system.

We’ll talk about The Graduate and more in our second hour when we welcome author, journalist and screenwriter Beverly Gray. Beverly’s latest book, Seduced by Mrs. Robinson: How The Graduate Became a Touchstone for a Generation, not only provides the backstory of the making of The Graduate, but examines the various critical reactions to the film, and why it particularly struck a nerve with moviegoers who came of age in 1967.

2017 is also the golden anniversary of the premiere of The Carol Burnett Show. With that in mind, this week’s show will also include Part 2 of our conversation with Wesley Hyatt, author of The Carol Burnett Show Companion: So Glad We Had This Time, and Chris Korman, son of actor, comedian and Carol Burnett Show star Harvey Korman. We’ll talk about some of our favorite performances of Harvey Korman, the ill-fated decision to replace Korman with Dick Van Dyke after Harvey left the Burnett show in 1977, Glen Campbell’s memorable appearance on The Carol Burnett Show, and a whole lot more.
