Carole Wells, plus the Legacies of Merv Griffin and Rankin/Bass: Next on TVC

Actress, author and philanthropist Carole Wells and television historian and author Steve Randisi will join us this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL, airing Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio,

Carole Wells began her career in the performing arts when she was twelve years old. At age sixteen, she sang the coloratura solo in Puccini’s operatic Messa di Gloria at the Hollywood Bowl, plus she co-starred in the television series National Velvet. In the course of her acting career, she appeared in twelve motion pictures, including Funny Lady, and more than 100 television shows, including a co-starring role opposite Ann Sheridan and Ruth McDevitt in the CBS-TV sitcom Pistols and Petticoats.

Carole’s life changed forever on Sept. 27, 1977, when she boarded Japanese Air Lines Flight 472 from Cairo to Bombay, en route to Bangkok. Within moments she, along with the 155 other passengers and fourteen crew members, were taken hostage by members of the terrorist group The Japanese Red Army and their flight hijacked to Dacca, Bangladesh. The ordeal lasted five days—but as you can imagine, it left a scar on Carole that did not begin to heal until forty years later.

Carole not only relives those events vividly in a new book, Hijacked: An Eyewitness Account of Evil, but talks about how her faith sustained her throughout those five days. Carole Wells will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: Author Steve Randisi will join us as we examine the legacy of The Merv Griffin Show (NBC/Synd./CBS/Synd., 1962-1986). One of the most successful and longest running variety/talk shows in television history, The Merv Griffin Show won critical acclaim, multiple Emmy Awards and a loyal audience, setting a standard that remains enviable today, while also presenting thousands of celebrated personalities from all walks of life: movies, television, politics, sports, books, the arts, stand-up comedy and everything in between. Thought mostly known for its wide success in first-run syndication—where it often aired either late afternoon or, in some markets, during prime time hours—The Merv Griffin Show started as a daytime talk show for NBC in 1962. Plus, as many of you know, the success of Merv’s Westinghouse show prompted CBS to bring The Merv Griffin Show to late night in 1969, where it competed against Johnny Carson and Joey Bishop: the first three-way network late night talk show competition in TV history.

Steve’s book, The Merv Griffin Show: The Inside Story, covers the Griffin show in all of its incarnations. Featuring original interviews with producer Bob Shanks, Merv’s longtime publicist Albert Fisher, longtime show writer Tony Garafolo, Julann Griffin (Merv’s ex-wife), and several longtime guests of The Merv Griffin Show, it provides insight into Merv Griffin the performer, Merv the producer, and Merv the human being. Steve Randisi will join us during our first hour; Phil Gries will co-host the segment.

Plus: Greg Ehrbar will take a look at new DVD releases of the holiday favorites Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town. Among the extra features included in each package is The Animagic World of Rankin/Bass, an excellent documentary that sheds light on the impact that animators Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass had on television in the 1960s and 1970s, and how they have continued to shape and influence the makers of holiday films and holiday TV programs to this day.
