Peter Marshall, Perry Como and What You Don’t Learn in Film School: Next on TVC

Singer/actor Peter Marshall and award-winning independent filmmaker Shane Stanley will join us this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

We will welcome back Peter Marshall this week as we spotlight Perry Como, the beloved entertainer whose career spanned the worlds of big band music, radio, and variety television. In many respects, Como’s popular musical variety show, which ran for fifteen consecutive seasons (first on NBC, then on CBS, then again on NBC) was the gold standard for TV variety programming, while Como’s recording career included more than 100 hit songs, spanning four decades. We’ll talk about why Como was such a perfect fit for TV, plus we’ll pay tribute to Peter’s dear friend Rose Marie, and more, in our second hour.

Peter Marshall is co-host, along with Nick Clooney, of Perry Como Classics: ‘Till the End of Time, a brand new special featuring highlights from long-lost and newly-restored episodes from Perry Como’s TV series and popular TV specials, including Como performing alongside Dean Martin, The McGuire Sisters, Lena Horne, Carol Burnett, Bing Crosby and The Lennon Sisters; fifteen complete performances of such Como hits as “Catch a Falling Star,” “Round and Round,” “Magic Moments,” “Hot Diggity,” “Mama Loves Mambo,” “And I Love You So,” “Home for the Holidays” and “It’s Impossible”; plus warm remembrances from Carol Burnett, Regis Philbin, Jay Leno, Leonard Maltin, Richard Carpenter, Debby Boone and many others. Airing as part of the long-running My Music series of PBS fund-raising specials, Perry Como Classics: ‘Till the End of Time premieres on most PBS stations nationwide during the weekend of Saturday, June 2. Check your local listings for time and channel. (For our listeners in the Garden City, New York area, Perry Como Classics: ‘Till the End of Time will air on WLIW airing the weekend of June 9.)

Also this week: We’ll talk about the Dos and Don’ts of independent filmmaking as we welcome multi-Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Shane Stanley. Shane has worked in virtually every capacity on and off the set since he was a youngster, including such hit shows as Entertainment Tonight and Seinfeld. Along with his father, Lee Stanley, Shane produced The Desperate Passage Series, a seven-part syndicated docu-drama series that not only won thirteen Emmy Awards, but finished first in the Nielsen ratings five out of the seven weeks it aired. Segments in The Desperate Passage Series include Gridiron Gang, which Shane and his dad later developed into the No. 1 box office feature motion picture starring Dwayne Johnson. Shane also has produced films starring Marlon Brando, Mira Sorvino, Thomas Hayden Church, Donald Sutherland, Marisa Tomei, Jane Seymour and Martin Sheen. He co-wrote two of the films and has worked closely with many top Hollywood executives, as well as such iconic filmmakers as Zalman King.

Shane’s new book, What You Don’t Learn in Film School, is a candid look at the film business that offers ambitious young filmmakers important information on how to navigate every aspect of making movies, from financing your film to pre-production, casting, marketing, assembling the right team (including knowing when to promote people, and when not to), how to find the right investor (and keeping that investor engaged throughout the project), finding the right distributor, and everything in between. We’ll touch on some of these topics, plus we’ll talk about the effect that the #MeToo movement continues to have on the film industry today; Shane’s upcoming summer sessions, which are free to the public; the pivotal role that Zalman King played throughout Shane’s career; and more. Shane Stanley joins us in our first hour.

Also this week: We’ll commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the tenth anniversary of the death of comedian George Carlin.
