The Loss of Carter B. Smith

Colleagues and Friends:

I’m sorry to report that the legendary CARTER B. SMITH passed away yesterday after a significant illness.  CB was a good friend of mine and of KSAV radio.   He enjoyed listening to us,  receiving our emails,  and was very generous with his time and skills in helping me program the station.   Due to his health,  he declined my offers to do a program on our station,  but it was very reluctantly as I could see in his face he really liked the idea.   We had been in discussions about Susan having him as a guest and she had already begun her research.

CB had been very forthright with me about his health problems which he continued to fight.   It seems like it was just last week that Roy and I sat with CB at Sam’s enjoying a nice lunch and laughing and remembering names and faces from great broadcast careers and times.   I sensed over the last few months that his quality of life was deteriorating.   His last public appearance was last summer at KRE where he sat in the control room and broadcast one final time.   I was honored to be there with him.   We had some email dialog after the Hall of Fame inductions last fall which sadly he could not attend.  (he was class of 07) and I relayed personal greetings from his friends and colleagues.   Recently his grand daughter said he was not doing well and did not recognize her anymore so I knew this was coming.    I just wasn’t ready for it when I looked at my Blackberry and saw the message from Mark Silverman with the subject  “carter b. smith just passed away”.

I lost a friend yesterday;   and broadcasting lost a LEGEND.  God bless you, CB.
