Walter Grauman and William Link: Next on TVC

Director Walter Grauman, writer/producer William Link, television writer Paul Robert Coyle and author Greg Ehrbar will join us on the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio, KSAV.org.

Walter Grauman began his career during the early days of television, producing and directing live shows before establishing himself as one of the most prolific directors of scripted drama in TV history. Best known for his longtime association with Quinn Martin, Walter directed the pilot episodes of The Fugitive, The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones and other QM series, as well as more than 20 episodes of Martin’s first series as a producer, The Untouchables. But Walter also enjoyed a distinguished record outside of QM Productions, both as a producer (including the series Felony Squad and Blue Light), as well as the director of such popular shows as Burke’s Law, Naked City, Route 66, Peter Gunn, Trapper John, M.D. and Murder, She Wrote. Walter will share some stories about his life in television when he joins us during our first hour.

Also joining us during our first hour will be longtime television writer Paul Robert Coyle, whose credits include episodes of The Streets of San Francisco, Barnaby Jones, Crazy Like a Fox, Simon and Simon, Jake and the Fatman, Stephen King’s The Dead Zone and other TV series. Paul has also written for such trade publications as Emmy magazine, where he interviewed Walter Grauman on more than one occasion, plus his first writing assignment on Barnaby Jones was the episode “The Fatal Dive,” which Walter Grauman directed.

Walter Grauman will be honored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive on Friday, March 23 with a special screening of “Fear in a Desert City,” the pilot episode of The Fugitive (which Walter directed), and “Noise of Death,” the segment of The Untouchables that marked the beginning of Walter’s professional affiliation and personal friendship with Quinn Martin. The event will be held at the Billy Wilder Theater, 10899 Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, beginning at 7:30pm, and will include a live conversation with Walter Grauman after the screening. For tickets and more information, go to www.cinema.ucla.edu.

This week’s show will also include Part 2 of our conversation with Emmy Award-winning writer/producer William Link about the legacy of Columbo and its iconic star, Peter Falk. The 2011-2012 television season marks the 40th anniversary of the premiere of Columbo, and we’ll talk about the NBC series, the ABC series, as well as the pilot, Prescription: Murder, when Bill joins us during our second hour.

Plus: Greg Ehrbar, co-author of Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records, will help us pay tribute to Academy Award-winning songwriter Robert Sherman. It’ll be a full program as always, and we certainly hope you’ll join us.
