Barnabas Collins, The Persian Room, and The Music of Danny Elfman: Next on TVC

Actress Kathryn Leigh Scott, author Patty Farmer and Academy Award-nominated composer David Newman will be among our guests for the next edition of TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio.

Actress, author and publisher Kathryn Leigh Scott will join us in our second hour to share some memories of her longtime friend Jonathan Frid, the man known to two generations of Dark Shadows fans as the reluctant vampire, Barnabas Collins. Jonathan Frid passed away on Friday, April 13. He and Kathryn, along with Lara Parker and David Selby, were all together in London last summer to film cameo appearances for the Dark Shadows movie directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp that opens in theaters on Friday, May 11. We’ll ask Kathryn about that, as well as how Jonathan made Barnabas Collins such as a memorable television character.

Jonathan Frid wrote the foreword to Dark Shadows: Return to Collingwood, a new book by Kathryn Leigh Scott that provides a behind-the-scenes look at both the original Dark Shadows, as well as some first-hand perspective at the making of the Dark Shadows movie. In addition, Kathryn also has several appearances across the country over the next few weeks, including Sunday, May 6 at 11am at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention; Sunday, May 13 at 2pm at Dark Delicacies, 3512 West Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank; Wednesday, May 16 at 7pm at the Barnes & Noble, The Grove at Farmers Market in Los Angeles, CA; Tuesday, May 22 at 7pm at the Barnes & Noble, Galleria Shopping Center in Edina, MN; and the annual Dark Shadows Weekend in Tarrytown, NY on July 28-29.

Also in our second hour, we’ll take a look at old New York as we welcome Patty Farmer, author of The Persian Room Presents, an oral history of one of the most elegant night spots that New York has ever known, the Persian Room in the landmark Plaza Hotel. For more than forty years (1934-1975), the Persian Room was the place to be in New York City, where such musical legends as Liberace, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Patti Page, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra would perform every night. Patty’s book features fun anecdotes and lively recollections from such Persian Room alumni as Andy Williams, Marge Champion, Polly Bergen, Diahann Carroll, Connie Stevens, Patti Page, Carol Lawrence, Jack Jones, Lainie Kazan and Michele Lee.

Patty Farmer will appearing along with Michele Lee, Connie Stevens, Lainie Kazan, Barbara Van Orden at the Barnes & Noble, The Grove at Farmers Market in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, May 9. They’ll be signing copies of The Persian Room Presents beginning at 7pm.

Joining us in our first hour this week will be Academy Award-winning composer and conductor David Newman (Anastasia, War of the Roses, Galaxy Quest, The Spirit). David will be conducting the American Youth Symphony on Sunday, May 6 as part of a day-long celebration of the music of Danny Elfman at UCLA’s Royce Hall, 340 Royce Drive in Los Angeles, on Sunday, May 6.

The concert begins at 7pm, and will feature music composed by Danny Elfman for Tim Burton’s Batman, Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands, and Jon Amiel’s post-civil war film Sommersby. The event will also include a symposium, beginning at 4pm, that will feature the American Youth Symphony performing some of Elfman’s music from the Errol Morris documentary Standard Operating Procedure, plus a discussion of Elfman’s career moderated by Los Angeles Times film music critic Jon Burlingame.

Both the 4pm symposium and 7pm concert are free to the public. However, reservations are required. For more information, call (310) 470-2332 or visit

Plus: Bill Funt will join us for a special edition of This Week in TV History that looks back at the 25th anniversary of the FOX television network.
