Wink Martindale: Next on TVC

Game show legend Wink Martindale will join us, plus we’ll play Part 2 of our conversation with Moody Blues historian Marc Cushman. All that and more this weekend on TV CONFIDENTIAL, Friday at 7pm ET and PT on Share-a-Vision Radio.

In the history of TV game shows, the name Wink Martindale has become synonymous with the word “host.” Wink has hosted nineteen game shows over the course of his career—including such popular games as Gambit, Debt and, of course, Tic Tac Dough—plus he has produced several others. And while he is best known for his work in television, Wink has deep roots in radio, both as a deejay, announcer and talk show host, plus he had a Gold Record in 1959 for the spoken word recording “Deck of Cards.”

Some of you may know that Wink Martindale had a long association with Elvis Presley. What you may not know is that Wink was there at the very beginning. He was at the station in Memphis, TN on the night when an Elvis Presley record was played on the radio for the very first time, launching a phenomenon that has never stopped.

Wink just released a new spoken word recording, “Heavenly Child,” which pays tribute to Elvis. We’ll ask him about that, plus we’ll talk about the annual countdown of the 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time that Wink hosts and produces, and which will be heard of hundreds of radio stations across the country on Christmas Day. We’ll also talk about game shows, of course, when Wink Martindale joins us in our second hour.

Our first hour will include Part 2 of our conversation with award-winning screenwriter, director, and music and television historian Marc Cushman. Marc’s latest book, Long Distance Voyagers: The Story of The Moody Blues, Volume 1: 1965-1979 is an in-depth biography and discography that covers the first fifteen years of the group’s history (roughly coinciding with the Mike Pinder era). This week we’ll talk about the origins of the band, the back story of such songs as “Nights in White Satin,” the longstanding relationship between The Moody Blues and The Beatles, and how the Moodies changed the way in which bands released albums.
